Homemade bread can be incredibly rewarding and delicious. Let's walk through the process step by step:

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (you can also use bread flour for a chewier texture, I always use bread flour)

  • 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) active dry yeast

  • 1 cup warm water (around 110°F/43°C)

  • 1 tbsp sugar (to activate the yeast)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 2 tbsp oil (olive oil or vegetable oil)

Equipment: I have included links to some of my favorite tools

Steps:

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine the warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the water and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes, until it becomes frothy. This indicates that the yeast is active and ready to use. If it doesn't froth, your yeast might be inactive, and you should start over with fresh yeast.

  2. Mix the Dough: In a larger mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and oil. Use a wooden spoon or dough whisk to mix until the dough starts coming together.

  3. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough by pushing it away from you with the heel of your hand and then folding it back towards you. Continue this process for about 8-10 minutes until the dough is smooth and elastic.

  4. First Rise (Fermentation): Shape the kneaded dough into a ball and place it in a lightly oiled bowl. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel. Allow the dough to rise in a warm, draft-free place for about 1-2 hours, or until it has doubled in size.

  5. Punch Down and Shape: Once the dough has risen, gently punch it down to release any air pockets. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and shape it into a loaf by folding the sides and then rolling it tightly. Place the shaped dough into a greased baking pan or loaf tin.

  6. Second Rise: Cover the baking pan with plastic wrap or a kitchen towel and let the dough rise again for about 30 minutes to 1 hour. It won't double in size like the first rise, but it should become noticeably puffy.

  7. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  8. Baking: Once the dough has completed its second rise, you can optionally brush the top with a little water or milk for a softer crust. Place the baking pan in the preheated oven and bake for about 25-30 minutes or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.

  9. Cooling: After baking, remove the bread from the oven and let it cool in the pan for a few minutes. Then, transfer the bread to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

  10. Enjoy! Once the bread has cooled, slice it and enjoy your freshly baked homemade bread! You can use it for sandwiches, toast, or simply with some butter or jam.

Remember that bread-making can take a bit of practice, so don't be discouraged if your first loaf isn't perfect. Experiment with different flour types, hydration levels, and shaping techniques to find what works best for you. Happy baking!
